The
Serra
de
Monchique
is
a
rolling
mountain
range
separating
the
Algarve
from
the
neighbouring
Alentejo
district.
Its
slopes
are
made
up
of
deciduous
oaks
and
chestnut
woods
and
it’s
one
of
the
few
areas
of
Portugal
that
shows
off
dazzling
autumn
colours.
Its
highest
peak
–
at
nearly
900m
–
is
Fóia,
from
where,
on
a
clear
day,
the
views
stretch
over
the
south
coast
of
the
Algarve
and
west
across
to
Cabo de São Vicente.
This
tour
allows
you
to
see
a
different
and
genuine
part
of
the
province:at
Monchique,
a
small
market
town
known
for
its
handicrafts,
honey
and
sausages
we’ll
be
doing
a
nice
walk
to
get
a
closer
contact
with
the
natives
and
on
the
cobbled
Rua
da
Igreja
behind
the
main
square,
to
visit
the
the
16th-century
Igreja
Matriz,
the
town’s
church.Time
to
taste
what
they
are
famous
for:
he
local
firewater,
Medronho,
distilled
from
the
tiny
red
berries
of
the
arbutus
unedo
that
grows on these hills.
Once
in
Silves,who
knows
if
you
would
like
to
pick
your
own
oranges
from
the
trees?Well
possible,
it
is
a
matter
of
planning
ahead.
Today
Silves
is
an
attractive,
crumbling
place
of
outdoor
cafes
and
scented
orange
groves
dominated
by
one
of
the
best-preserved
castles
in
the
Algarve.
The
Moorish
Fortaleza,
which
boasts
a
complete
set
of
sandstone
walls
and
detached
towers,
occupies
twelve
thousand square meters on top of the hill that overlooks the town.
