Many
travelers,
landing
in
the
Algarve
unknowingly,
turn
their
back
to
this
spectacular
part
of
the
coast.
Sandy
not
rocky,
quiet
not
busy,
historical
not
touristic.
Therefore,
on
this
journey
you
will
be
able
to
see
that
since
the
roman
presence
the less-visited eastern coast was stage for an intense activity.
Here, the long white beaches are secluded and the port towns are sleepier.
Along
the
coast
we’ll
stop
at
Olhão
for
a
colorful
and
lively
experience
at
the
market
as
well
as
at
the
fishermen
quarter.
The
fishing
of
tuna
and
sardines
was
the
main
activity
of
this
town,
where
an
important
fish
canning
industry
developed during the second half of the 19th century.
Then
Tavira
,
white
stone-tiled
streets,worn
smooth
by
centuries
of
feet,
line
the
pathways,grand
boulevards
and
picturesque
church
squares.
Tavira
became
important
during
the
Age
of
Discoveries,
serving
as
a
base
for
Portuguese
expeditions
to
North
Africa,
supplying
provisions
(especially
salt,
wine
and
dried
fish)
and
a
hospital.
The
Roman
settlement
of
Balsa
was
just
down
the
road,
near
Santa Luzia ,today the capital of octopus catch.
Finally
Cacela
:
The
history
of
the
surrounding
area
dates
back
to
the
settlements
of
the
Greeks
and
Phoenicians
in
the
Algarve.
The
name
Cacela
most
likely
originates
from
the
Arabic
during
the
Moorish
occupation
period.
It
is
the
most
eastern
link
in
the
chain
of
islands
and
peninsulas
of
the
Ria
Formosa
between
Manta Rota and Faro protecting the lagoon landscape from the open sea.
It’s the cherry on the top of the cake!
